WAR-BEAU: MIRROR/MIRROR 2012

“I am he as you are me and we are all together…” – John Lennon
We live in an era of radically advanced social connection, and yet as it becomes increasingly common to be able to speak to people face-to-face all over the world at the click of a mouse, the potential for meaningful connection to be made all too often becomes reduced to the level of the mundane. Angelbert Metoyer’s Mirror:Mirror 2012 proposal is a radical exploration into the true potential of this form of connection, placing the viewer inside a multi-dimensional interactive teleportation chamber – a wormhole in time and space through which they can experience several random, and potentially global spiritual encounters.
Metoyer proposes the creation of a dark chamber consisting of a large black mirror (eight foot by five) framed by white fluorescent light. The mirror will thus appear to the viewer to be a black tunnel emanating white light that reaches into infinite space (it will also contain the reflection of said viewer). The chamber will be soundtracked by one of Metoyer’s investigations into the primordial sound, and will be connected to its twin in another locale. The twin chamber will also contain a black mirror emanating light, in which another viewer will also be able to see his or her own image. As each viewer comes closer to the mirror they will become aware of the other person’s projection and will be able to communicate with them directly. Each will appear to the other as though they are divinely illuminated in an infinite space.
Metoyer’s intention over the next few years is to install a chamber in every city in the world, and to give each portal the ability to connect with a multiplicity of destinations. Metoyer’s Mirror:Mirror 2012 proposal utilizes technology that is becoming ever-more commonplace to create a space in which the human animal can genuinely experience a connection to the mystical and divine: out of the science comes an insightful and meaningful way to commune with the omnipresent, archetypal self.
Essentially, Mirror:Mirror 2012 is a powerful tool for the promotion of peace, and Metoyer intends to have linked chambers installed in galleries in places such as Beirut and Jerusalem, Grozny and Moscow, Pyongnang and Seoul, and other areas of the world where propaganda and dogma perpetuates division.
